The move comes as shipping companies face tougher rules on truck pollution from regulators in the United States and recently Europe. The benefit from renewable natural gas comes from capturing harmful methane emissions that were going to be released into the environment anyway. In New Deal-era murals spanning the staircase and lobby, the Russian emigre Victor Arnautoff depicted Washington in 13 scenes. Two in particular have generated student complaints for more than 50 years, and in April, an ad hoc committee recommended that the artwork be archived and removed. In one, the statesman stands over a map of a young America while pointing westward; at the end of his arm, …

Alabama’s abortion law addresses an urgent human rights issue

(CNN)The Alabama pro-life law signed into law Wednesday addresses a human-rights issue: the right to life. The argument that only a woman’s body is at stake doesn’t work: from conception, a pregnancy involves at least distinct bodies that of the fertilized egg which contains a distinct and new blend of DNA (from mother and father), all that is needed to become a baby, and that of the mother. It is dangerous when a society ignores the rights of the young and innocent. There are various statistics about the prevalence of abortion. House GOP Leader: Alabama Abortion Law Goes Too Far

California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the House minority leader, told reporters that the law, which doesn’t allow exceptions for abortions in cases of rape and incest, “goes further than I believe.” McCarthy wouldn’t take a stand on whether the Supreme Court should strike down the measure, the strictest abortion law in the nation, if a challenge were to reach the court. Opinion polls show widespread opposition to overturning the high court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which could return the issue back to the states. Republicans have been on the offensive this year trying to link congressional Democrats to late-term abortion measures pushed by some of the party’s most liberal forces in state legislatures such as New York’s.
