War of Will wins Preakness Stakes at Pimlico

(CNN)War of Will, which was impeded by Maximum Security in the controversial Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, bounced back Saturday and finished first at the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Since the Kentucky Derby, the owner of Maximum Security, Gary West, has filed a federal lawsuit, seeking to overturn the disqualification. He has also offered a $20 million bounty to the owners of Country House — declared the winner at the Derby — War of Will, Long Range Toddy and Bodexpress, the four horses that were impeded at Churchill Downs. West says he will pay $5 million to the owner of any of the quartet that beats Maximum Security on their next meeting. The Preakness Stakes is …

Alabama’s abortion law addresses an urgent human rights issue

(CNN)The Alabama pro-life law signed into law Wednesday addresses a human-rights issue: the right to life. The argument that only a woman’s body is at stake doesn’t work: from conception, a pregnancy involves at least distinct bodies that of the fertilized egg which contains a distinct and new blend of DNA (from mother and father), all that is needed to become a baby, and that of the mother. It is dangerous when a society ignores the rights of the young and innocent. There are various statistics about the prevalence of abortion. The Guttmacher Institute claims that nearly “one in four women in the United States … will have an abortion by age 45.” There were more than 3.78 million babies …

‘GoT’ and ‘Big Bang Theory’ finales highlight shift to fewer shared TV experiences

(CNN)Two major hits, “Game of Thrones” and “The Big Bang Theory,” are signing off within days of each other. Whether those shared viewing experiences represent a celebration or a wake is once again the subject of debate in TV industry circles. This discussion is hardly a new one. Each time a major hit goes off the air — “The Cosby Show” in 1992, “Seinfeld” in 1998, “Friends” in 2004, “The Sopranos” in 2007 — there seems to be a new round of speculation regarding whether TV has crossed a bridge into what amounts to a smaller, more dispersed world. When “Seinfeld” ended, the late Larry Gelbart — who developed “M*A*S*H,” still the most-watched series finale ever — cited the value …

House GOP Leader: Alabama Abortion Law Goes Too Far

California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the House minority leader, told reporters that the law, which doesn’t allow exceptions for abortions in cases of rape and incest, “goes further than I believe.” McCarthy wouldn’t take a stand on whether the Supreme Court should strike down the measure, the strictest abortion law in the nation, if a challenge were to reach the court. Opinion polls show widespread opposition to overturning the high court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which could return the issue back to the states. Republicans have been on the offensive this year trying to link congressional Democrats to late-term abortion measures pushed by some of the party’s most liberal forces in state legislatures such as New York’s. ‘The Big Bang Theory’ finale closes with a big dose of heart

(CNN)The following contains spoilers about “The Big Bang Theory” series finale. As it turned out, though, the episode (rather sweetly credited to a dozen writers, including co-creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady) served as a conduit to showcase the way in which the show itself has changed — adding key female characters, marrying off the guys and graduating to more grown-up problems and issues, without giving up their passion for things like comic books and “Star Wars” movies. The graduation to adulthood saw the characters take another major step in the finale, as Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) learned that they were pregnant — joining Howard (Simon Helberg) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) in the parents club — a …

Wellcome Trust investing 80m in snakebite treatment

Scientists say antivenom exists for only 60% of all the snakes in the world New drugs for snakebite are desperately needed, say scientists, to replace the current 100-year-old treatment made by injecting snakes venom into a horse and harvesting antibodies which is very expensive, may not work and can cause lethal allergic reactions. Snakebite, says the Wellcome Trust, is the cause of the worlds biggest hidden health crisis and it is investing 80m in the hope of solving it. The World Health Organization will this month also launch a snakebite strategy aiming to halve deaths by 2030. Every five minutes, on average, 50 people are bitten by a snake. Between 81,000 and 138,000 people die from snakebite every year and …

‘Hate will prevail’: Icelandic BDSM band put Eurovision and Israel in a bind

Leather-clad group Hatari say this years contest, in which they will represent Iceland, is built on a lie Nothing titillates the Icelandic bondage and dominance-themed band Hatari more than a glaring contradiction. On stage, the group, whose name means Hater, present a fascist-inspired dystopia of blood-splattered whippings. In person, they are softly spoken and occasionally cheerfully optimistic. They have slammed Eurovision in Israel which is the subject of rise of populism in Europe. Hate Will Prevail takes it forward, imagining a dark future. The militaristic, authoritarian style of BDSM bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism seemed apt and they have been welcomed, they say, with open arms by the Icelandic fetish community. Chinese cargo plane arrives in Venezuela

(CNN)A Chinese cargo plane arrived in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas on Monday, the Venezuelan Ministry of Communication has told CNN. Maduro retains the backing of Beijing, which has repeatedly opposed any action that causes tensions or unrest in Venezuela. China is owed vast sums by the Maduro government; over the last decade, Beijing has lent more than $50 billion to the oil-rich nation through oil-for-loan agreements, according to Reuters. While Maduro has also permitted aid deliveries from NGOs such as the Red Cross, he has refused to open Venezuela’s borders to aid from a number of countries that recognize opposition leader Juan Guaidó as Venezuela’s legitimate interim president. Those countries include Canada, the UK, Germany and the US. Original …

A sex strike is not enough: women need to down tools completely | Suzanne Moore

The idea proposed last week by Alyssa Milano wont cut it. To assert their worth, women should refuse to fulfil the unpaid labour expected by society Sex is the very least of our concerns, the last thing that has to be crossed off the to-do list. Or so I have heard from harassed women in the school playground. Yet sex is the very meaning of life, the cement that glues together every relationship, half our culture also tells us, while the remainder portrays women as a series of orifices to be penetrated. Perhaps sex is all and none of these things. the actor Alyssa Milano, is right to be appalled by womens unpaid work, which is mostly caring for others. …

Pete Buttigieg Warns ‘White Identity Politics’ Launching Nation Into ‘Crisis’

Pete Buttigieg condemned the Trump administration’s embrace of “peak white identity politics” in a speech Saturday, warning of a brewing “crisis of belonging” across the nation. Buttigieg pointed to the potential for “the beginning of a new form of American solidarity” in which the country realizes “that the one thing we do have in common may be the challenge of belonging in a society that sees us for what makes us all different.” Emphasizing the differences between minorities and white populations in access to health care, employment and citizenship, Buttigieg added, “When you do not belong, it doesn’t just put you in a bad mood, it puts you in a different country.” His invocation of immigrants and communities of color …
